A Resolution in favor of Rev. John McElroy, Principal ,
of St. John's Literary Institution in Frederick.
WHEREAS, it appears to this General Assembly, that
John McElroy, a citizen of this state, did, in the year eigh-
teen hundred and twenty-nine, at his own risk, and on his
own responsibility, aided in part by the charitable contri-
butions of the citizens of Frederick county, erect in the ci-
ty of Frederick, a convenient and spacious building for
purposes of education, capable of accommodating more
than two hundred scholars; and since the erection of the said
building (known as St. "John's Literary Institution") near-
ly two hundred youths have received therein, rudimental,
classical and mathematical instruction, without any charge,
AND WHEREAS, it doth further appear, that there are now,
more than seventy boys receiving instruction gratuitously
in the said institution; and that to enable the said John
McElroy, principal of said institution, to pay the arreara-
ges due on the said buildings, and support this admirable
charity in full efficiency; pecuniary assistance from the
state is desirable and necessary, and whereas it is the ob-
vious policy of the state, to patronize and encourage esta-
blishments distinguished for their general benevolence and
unquestionable public utility, such as the one herein de-
scribed—Therefore,
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the Treasurer of the Western Shore, be and he is hereby
authorized, and directed to pay the sum of four hundred
dollars, on or about the first day of February 1833, and
annually thereafter, out of any unappropriated money in
the treausury to John McElroy, Principal of St. John's
Literary Institution of Frederick; provided, he shall in all
